Studies Suggest, Migranes Can Lead to Heart Attack or Stroke

Many people suffer from migranes but don’t take them seriously enough. One or two pills of Advil or Excedrine, or many other pharmaceutical innovations can do the job of taking your pain away. What headache sufferers don’t realize is that these pills will only suppress migraine, but will not treat it. Studies suggest, migraines can be linked to heart attack and stroke.
Facts: Estimates indicate that there are more than 45 million headache sufferers in the United States. Only 11 percent of them consult a neurologist for evaluation or treatment. Two-thirds of headache sufferers remain undiagnosed. Headaches account for eight million visits each year. Most headache sufferers experience two or more concurrent headache types.
Middle-aged women are affected the most and have many reasons to worry about more serious diseases than bad headaches. According to Health.com report, new research suggested that women who experience migranes accompanied by auras which are sensory disturbances signaling oncoming pain, also have increased risk of heart attacks or stroke. Scientists think that these women may also experience tissue death in the brain. It is very scarry.
During 12 years one study was conducted with almost 28,000 female health professionals. It did show that women who had once-a-week migranes were four times more likely to have a stroke than women without migranes. The study also examined women with infrequent migranes who had them less than one per month. These women were more than twice as likely needed a heart procedure or have a heart attack than women who were migraine free.
However, here are good news. The researchers of this study said the risk of having a stroke or heart attack is relatively small for women with migranes. The study’s lead author, Dr. Tobias Kurth, who wrote an editorial for the brain study, added, “Overall, this is not a study that should scare women with migraines with auras.”
The lessions are still clinically silent. It is unclear to researchers if they are harmful or not. Dr.Kurth thinks that ” Based on current knowledge, they are not.” But it’s a good idea to consult doctors specializing in headaches and migraines and research what is available in alternative medicine. In my next post I’ll reveal how these illnesses were treated with natural remedies for centuries. You never know until you try.
