Today we (in the U.S and Canada) celebrate Thanksgiving, which is really a big harvest festival. We give our thanks for the harvest and express our gratitude to everything good we have in our lives, and at first, to our famillies and good food on our tables.

Due to heavy rains this year and almost impossible conditions for picking pumpkins we did not see too many of these symbols of Thanksgiving in all their natural beauty in grocery stores. No matter what, we did manage to keep the tradition. We even went further. We changed our holiday menu a little bit, perfected it and came up with several new, great meals with tasteful, healthy and nutritional benefits. About these new recipes read in our next post.

Want to have fun? Watch these three parts of Thanksgiving cartoon about Arnold and Helga who were sick of the Thanksgiving traditions established by their families. So they decided to go to Mr. Simmons’ house to celebrate the holiday. This was a disappointment, and in the same time a good lesson for both. They learned that nowhere in the world can feel better to celebrate the holiday of thanks than with your family gathered together around the dinner table full with lovingly prepared homemade delights.

Did you notice when you eat junk and fast foods it make you physically and mentally sick? Maybe you don’t realize, but it does come directly from many low quality products you eat. These foods are loaded with chemicals, bad additives, and artificial colors.

“The truth is You are what you eat,” says Dr. Vincent Bellonzi, D.C., C.C.N., a chiropractor and a certified Clinical Nutritionist, who has made the study of nutrition and exercise a central pillar of his practice and personal philosophy.

Watch this video and listen what he has to say about harm that junk and fast foods do to our bodies and health.

In my previous post I wrote about how chemicals, chemical fertilizers, used by farmers around the world, affect negatively our land, health and wellbeing. Do you know that more than 12,000 manmade chemicals are added to our foods? If these chemical “devils” are added even in tiny quantities, the harm they cause is irreparable.

Probably you are surprised, 12,000 chemicals! Quite a lot for our stomachs to digest!  Food manufacturers combine certain number of chemicals to make processed (“dead”) foods edible, colorful, tasteful, and to preserve them for a long time. The same happens with dairy products.

Our grandmothers will be in shock, if in their time they found raw milk for human comsumption with a shelf life of 6-8 weeks. Real, fresh milk after boiling can be good only for three days!!! So milk we can buy in “Whole Foods” or other supermarkets, even organic, but with so long shel life, definitely contains chemicals. You don’t need PhD or MD degrees to figure it out. Trust your instincts and common sense.

Many farmers confirm, they use Coca Cola and Pepsi as a substitute for pesticides. “It seems to work for the goodness of the crop,” they say. Are you still drinking these internationally popular, soft drinks loaded with chemicals? Thanks to consumers who buy and drink them, these unhealthy beverages are so great moneymakers for the companies producing them. It looks they are not going to stop any time soon. If you support their sales, why they should care about your health?!

So, stop now drinking these attractively packaged and marketed Coco Colas and Pepsis, if you want to stay healthy and live longer. Hope this video, as just a reminder, will convince you to change your habits with soft drinks and drink natural spring and mineral water, fresh homemade vegetable and fruit juices and smoothies.

Why did our ancestors have their diets different than ours now? To answer this question, let’s go back only a hundred years. As a matter of fact, our ancestors generally ate from the land producing mostly organic produce. The land was kept natural. Farmers and gardeners fed it with essential nutrients by mulching, adding manure, and crop rotation.

When I was growing up in southeastern Europe, I watched how my grandfather did exactly the same. He used these simple, natural means which benefited his land and the crop, and served to maintain the quality of the soil. As a result, the plants, fruits and vegetables on our fields grew natural and full with nutritional ingredients, and so the cows, pigs, chicken and other animals that fed on.

The same way farmers operated almost everywhere in Eastern European countries. They did not have any other choice. Industrial plants were destroyed during the war.  Local manufacturers could not continue to produce any chemicals and  did not have any reserves of these poisons left. Fortunatelly, farmers did not have hard currency to buy chemicals from the West. There was really great, healthy time for consumers who could benefit from eating pure, natural foods because farmers were forced to fed the land with natural means, in  the old-fashioned way.

Imagine, you are travelling in Italy. Today you visit a beautiful ancient and medieval city of Lucca in Tuscany, famous for its intact Renaissance-era city walls, palazzos, gardens and monuments. People don’t drive so many cars there, as we do in the same size towns in America Italians and visiting tourists walk or ride bikes everywhere.

This type of activity and a healthy Mediterranean cuisine (that Italians are famous for) with lots of fresh meals, vegetables and fruits, liberated them from constant worry about gaining weight, and feeling guilty when they eat. They simply enjoy their life and healthy foods. So should you.

But there, across the ocean, in a New World, is a little bit different. Many people are busy trying to solve a puzzle: what new diet they should be on to loose weight? Bring it on… this real “headache” cultivated by pushy weight-loss marketing “gurus.” If you don’t gain weight, they are out of business. To whom will they preach their ridiculous ideas, if people will maintain normal weight? Why should we listen to them?

Just follow up your simple plan and you’ll not gain weight in a first place:
*Eat smart, small portions–healthy, fresh foods 4-5 times a day;
*Don’t eat after 6:00 PM (only a bunch of almonds or pumpkin seeds, a glass of kefir, one apple and/or hot tea with lemon)
* Move your body: walk everywhere you can, take the stairs instead of an elevator, ride a bike, exercise.

How many fat or overweight people did you see in Italy, France, Spain? Not too many. So, do yourself a favor. First of all, relax, it’s your weekend! Wake up with sunrise and don’t rush. Make your healthy, green breakfast and take your time to eat it slow. Enjoy your delicious, fresh meal made from scratch like Italians do. Then go outside to greet a beautiful day, the sun, blue sky and green Nature. Then walk or take your bike and ride several miles to burn 100-300 calories. Come back home with new energy and fine mood. Now click on an arrow below and explore Lucca by day and night.

First step in our clean and green diet: learn how to read food labels. It is very important because food companies try to confuse consumers with carefully designed nutrition panels. Maybe you thought you did understand all numbers in food labels. Truth is, probably you don’t. Is it not nice if you can hear this valuable information from Jeff Novick, MS, RD, the former executive of one of the biggest and ‘fattest’ American food corporations, Kraft Foods?
