There’s nothing more annoying than a sore throat. Everything you eat and drink feels as if you are swallowing a sandpaper. The common home remedies we use to cure sore throat – honey, cough drops, herbal tea etc. can provide temporarily relief, but if you really want to treat sore throat naturally than follow these simple yet effective home remedies.
What Causes Sore Throat?
Sore throats are generally caused by viruses or bacteria that usually emerge as cold and flu. Other causes include allergies, gastro-oesophagal reflux disease or irritation from nasogastric tube which goes down your nose to stomach and is used to give liquids if a person is not able to eat solid foods.
This is an old remedy, but it really works. Gargling with salt water reduce inflammation by controlling the acidity that causes irritation in the throat. It is an easy and economical way to cure sore throat and get rid of phlegm. The recommended ratio is 1 tablespoon of salt in one cup of water. Using too much salt could have a drying effect on the throat.
Suck on Ice Lollies
Many people will find it bizarre but sucking on ice actually soothes your aching throat as it numbs the inflamed area. So grab your favorite ice lolly or if you want to avoid the sugar, just lick ice cubes.
Drinking cinnamon tea really helps in treating throat pain. To make this tea, add a cinnamon stick and one tablespoon of fennel seeds in water and boil it for a few minutes. Cinnamon is an anti-inflammatory spice while fennel seeds have excellent antioxidants and antibacterial properties. It does not only soothes sore throat but also treats colic.
Lemon and Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is another ingredient for treating sore throat due to its antibacterial properties. Lemon on the other hand, helps in alleviating phlegm. Make a drink by adding one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon of lemon juice and honey to a glass of warm water. Drink it 2-3 times a day for faster relief from sore throat.
5. Baking Soda
Adding baking soda to the salt water solution and gargling helps in killing bacteria and preventing common throat infections. The ratio recommended by National Cancer Institute is 1/8th teaspoon of baking soda, 1/4th teaspoon of salt in one cup of water. It is also advised to gargle with this solution every 3 hours during the day.
6. Stay Hydrated
Even though drinking liquids can be a little unpleasant for some people with sore throats, but it is very important to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, fresh fruit juices or broth. You can tell if you are drinking enough water by checking your urine color. If its light pale, it means your fluid intake is fine, but if it’s darker, then you need to increase it.
7. Eat Garlic
Garlic is know for its antiseptic and antibacterial effects and several other medicinal benefits. Garlic has allicin, a chemical that helps in killing bacteria that causes inflammation. If you can not eat raw garlic clove, then you can chop it finely and sprinkle a good amount on your food. Alternatively, you can also take herbal garlic pills if you can’t stand its smell or taste.
8. Honey and Ginger
Honey is great for relieving sore throat as it is rich in antibacterial nutrients that can fight the bacteria causing infection and speed up recovery. Ginger is another natural home remedy for sore throat as it is an anti-inflammatory spice that helps kill bad bacteria. It also flushes out toxins from the body and enhance your blood circulation. Add a pinch of dried or freshly grated ginger in a tablespoon of organic honey and slowly lick the mixture. Have it 4-5 times a day to get faster relief from throat pain.
9. Avoid Irritants
According to health experts at Mayo Clinic, cigarette smoke and harsh cleaning products could also cause or promote throat irritation and so it is recommended to avoid them.
